Evaluation

1. In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms or conventions of real media products?
My magazine challenges the conventions of real media products as i have followed the codes and conventions of music magazines. This included concentrating about how to set the articles, pictures and title on the front cover. Having the information helped me to ensure i had a decent music magazine front cover, which followed the codes and conventions. During the making of my music magazine front cover i had a real music magazine at the side so that i could relate my work to that. This made sure i was making my front cover look as real as possible.

The contents page of my music magazine follows the codes and conventions of magazines. When i was producing my contents page i made sure i always had a real music magazine by the side of me, i believe this helped me through making the magazine. The codes and conventions included things like put columns in, make sure the title of the magazine is on the contents. Having done this and followed the codes and conventions i believe that this will have helped me achieve a good looking contents page.

On my double paged spread i also followed the codes and conventions of real music magazines, in doing this it helped me to achieve my goal of having a good looking double page spread. The codes and conventions allowed me to know what i was doing throughout the making of the magazine. Doing the double page spread was confusing but i believe that i followed the conventions of music magazines and this helped my double page spread look like a real one. The codes and conventions of music magazines included things like put the article in columns, have one main image, standfirst, byline and Big article name.

Overall my music magazine turned out to be a good product i believe that following the codes and conventions made me produce the product i did.

Magazine Evaluation

2. How does your media product represent particular social groups?
•Question/interview target audience, asking about the magazine and appealing to them (video/voice clip)

My media product represents particular social groups as when participants completed my questionnaires i reviewed over them and made sure my magazine would be something they would enjoy reading. In my questionnaires i had questions about their favourite colours and if they thought the person the front cover was nice looking then would that tempt them into buying the magazine. In the questionnaire as people said there favourite colours are red, white or black i decided to use all three of them colours throught the magazine, also they answered that if the person on the front cover was nice looking they said they would be more likely to pick up the magazine and buy it. So on my front cover i tried to find a good looking boy so it could appeal to the audience. Having a good looking boy appeals to the feminine audience whereas in y magazine the articles will be more appealing to the male audience. It represent a younger target audience by the way everything is set out, colours, mise en scene and pictures.

Questions:

•Video self using Photoshop and Quark, and show designs from start to finish, how it changed to attract the audience

Throughout the making of my magazine I have changed my design a various amount of time.

1) The artist that i had on my front cover in the first few designs was a singer called jack clarke and whilst making my magazine i realised that Jack didnt look like an Indie singer this is this reason why I changed my mind on the artist on the front.

2)Background- The background of my magazine started off as being a plain grey background and throughout the design making process I decided to change it so it had a better mise en scene. I changed the background to a brick wall, I believe that this made my whole front cover look differennt and I believe it made the magazine look Indie.

3) I changed the stand first from having "Feel music love Indie" in a star shape to having it just on one line. This made the magazine look more indie, whereas before it looked more like a pop magazine with the star shape.

4) I had the box on the bottom left corner, showing the arctc monkays fans but I decided to change that as that made my magazine look more like a child's magazine/pop magazine.

5) I changed the position and colour of the main article "Adam Price" as when it was white it didnt seem to stand out enough on the background, but when I played around with the colours red seemed to be the most eye-catching. I changed the position of the article as when it was on the left hand side it just looked like the rest of the other articles and didnt look like the main one. So i moved it to the middle of the page and made the font bigger, this instantly made the front cover look more real and it then seemed to follow the codes and conventions of music magazines.

3. What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

There is a small variety of media institutions that might distribute my media product. First being, 'IPC'. This is because IPC Media publishes a huge range of magazines and media brands. It covers music magazines, e.g 'NME', television, hair, living, gossip etc. IPC distributes music magazines the same genre as what mine is for example NME, therefore i believe that IPC would be a good institution to sell my magazine through.

Above is just a few of the magazine that IPC media produces.

Another media institution that might distribute my media product is 'BAUER'. The Bauer Publishing Group is a worldwide media empire offering over 230 magazines in 15 countries. Bauer Media covers music magazines such as, 'Kerrang', 'Mojo', and 'Q'. These are 3 very popular music magazines, these 3 magazines also are the same genre as mine, therefore as they sell such a wide range of magazines i believe that BAUER Media might distribute my media product.

4. Who would be the audience for your media product?
•Both genders all ages, mainly aimed at 16-25 year olds

I chose the age range 16-25 as they are a younger target range, also they are the ages were they are interested in a wide variety of music.

5.How did you attract/address your audience?
I attracted/addressed my audience by making the mise en scene fit in with the pictures i was taking. In my questionnaire I had the participants answering many questions as I knew it was going to help me throughout the project. Having my questionnaire by my side and having another existing magazine to look at aswel helped me produce an interesting product.

While producing this magazine i related back to my target audiences for advice, so inbetween my production work i would show them what i have been doing then they would say whether they would buy it or not. If the answer was no then i would look over my questionnaire result see what i could change and make fit in to meet the right standards and stand out to the correct audience.

6. What have you learnt from technologies from the process of constructing this product?
•Film self using technologies
•Voice clip of me talking bout using them

I have learnt many knew things from doing my music magazine product, i have also enjoyed doing it aswel. Whilst making my music magazine product i have been introduced to new devices like dictaphones, still cameras and videa cameras, also i have been introduced to new softwares like Quark.
Withoiut these uses of technology my media product wouldnt of turned out the way it has done.
Being taught how to use Quark help me with my production of the magazine. My contents page would not be anywhere near as good if i hadn't of used that software. Quark is a more professional device for us to use whilst making the media product because it is a software that magazine industries use. Therefore it was helpful to us during the time spent producing the magazine.

7. Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to a full product?
Throughout the time of me producing my preliminary task which was the school magazine to producing my music magazine i have learnt a whole new range of techniques in how to improve magazines.

Quark-Whilst making the School magazine I was only taught how to use photoshop and I didn't know how to use Quark at that time. The difference between making the prelimary contents page to the music magazine contents was that I had the knowledge of how to use Quark. Quark sotfware is helpful as it has the guidelines for how to set up the columns, which I found helpful as it didn't mean that I had to fiddle around with lining the columns up.
Cameras- Whilst making the Music magazine I had more knowledge on camera angles, this helped me make my pictures look more interesting. For my double page spread picture, I used a tripod to help keep the camera as still as possible. This helped me produce the correct picture for my article.
Video Camera- Whilst producing the evaluation i used a video camera to ask a participant a question this enabled me to make my evaluation look more interesting in order to score a higher grade.

Whilst making my music magazine i have learnt many more different techniques to use during productions. During making the music magazine I was taught how to use quark, also i was taught how to use camera's more efficently. I have gained alot of knowledge in between the process of making both these magazines, with my music magazine i did alot more background research to help me produce the magazine whereas with the school magazine i basically used trial and error, so i seen what it looked like and if i didnt like it i would change my idea. That is the difference between how i have made the music magazine.
I enjoyed producing the music magazine over the school magazine because i had more knowledge about what to do, which made me want to produce a better and more professional magazine. With my music magazine contents page i always tried to refer back to a real music magazine just to see different features that i could add in to make my work look better.

STILL NEED ARTICLE NAME!!!!

Inverse exclusively interview hippies on the hill fans and find out about the gigs and how they act on stage. I ask Adam Price, Harry, Jess and Amanda my questions. These fans release cool in formation about the boys to Inverse.

Hippies on the Hill are a popular boy band from Wallasey, Merseyside, who created their band from knowing each other in their secondary school, Mosslands High School. The band has been together for just over three years, this shows that the band have great confidence around each other and know the way each member plays. Hippies on the hill have a manager who arranges gigs from small places such as local youth centres to bigger places such as the Liverpool o2 academy. These lads have a lot of attention and have large audiences at their gigs and plenty of fans. Four of these fans are Adam Price, Harry, jess and Amanda; Inverse has had the opportunity to interview these fans.
I have been to one Hippies on the Hill gig as I had to see at least one performance before I interviewed people about them. I thought the band played very well and put so much effort into every song. Adam has been to see 5 of the boy’s performances, Harry has been to see 6 and Jess and Amanda have been to see 13. I went to watch Hippies play at the Liverpool o2 academy, Adam says “I have been to watch the lads in a few places these include a mosslands gig, the cavern club twice the vale gig twice. Mosslands is an all boy’s high school in Wallasey, Merseyside and the vale gig is a park in Wallasey called Wallasey, and in the summer they hold band events and the Hippies perform there. Harry has been to the same as Adam except he has also seen them perform at the Wirral show. The Wirral show is a summer show that is held every year and the Hippies on the Hill performed there. Amanda and Jess say “I have seen Hippies play at various places the Liverpool o2 academy, the cavern club, a gig in the 27 club and at Weatherhead high school and Mosslands high school, the Cavern Club is a famous club where the Beatles are known for playing”. The girls go to the gigs together as they are all friends with each other.
Inverse were not able to choose there favourite band member because I had only been to one gig but I think all the band are amazing so I don’t think I am able to say who it could be. Adam says “My favourite band member is Brad. He is the singer of the band and I just think the way he sings really draws the audience’s attention into every song. Sean is Harry’s favourite band member because he gets the audience going and he is so amusing to watch, Sean is one of the bass players in the group. Inverse has to agree on that one he really gets the crowd going in every song. Jess says “I like Craig, he is the other guitar player, I just think he is stylish and he looks like a real band member from the way he dresses to the style of his hair. Amanda says that she loves Sean only because she’s good friends with him, but Amanda thinks he is a big part to the band.
When the band was playing I was thinking about if I could tell them to write a song about me I would tell them to sing about friends and life in general. What would you tell them to sing about? Adam says that he would tell them to write about fashion and friends because they mean a lot to him. Harry says “Sport and girls (laughs)”. Jess says” If they were to sing a song about me I would want them to write about my friends and family. They are things that I couldn’t live without. Amanda says “Friends, family, dancing, music and parties, they could chose what to sing about”. If you all could have a choice of a song for the boys to write about what would you tell them to write? Adam says “I would tell them to write about their life from start to now”. Can I ask why? “Because the audience and fans would get into the song because they would want to know what their life has been like. Harry said that they could maybe sing about how they became a band and friends. Jess says “I think they should sing about how their lives have changed since they became a band”. What do you mean by “how their lives have changed”? Jess says “What I mean is with the female attention and how much they are loved”. Amanda said that she thinks a good idea for a song is to sing about their fans. What do you mean by that? “I mean that they could sing about how much they appreciate them and how they have helped them get so far.
I believe that “Hippies on the hill” fans like them so much because they have such loving personalities and show a positive attitude with everything they do which makes an impact on fans. Adam says “I think they have so many fans because they are so down to earth. The “Hippies” always seem to have time for their fans. Also Harry says “They just have loads of fun and don’t seem to care about whether people are going to like their songs or not. I asked jess and Amanda the same questions but of course they know the band much better than anyone else, Jess said that the band appreciates their fans and always try to impress every time they play. Amanda says “Every time they write a song, they write it so every type of audience can enjoy it. So any gender or age can enjoy their songs. “Hippies on the hill” are always full of energy which makes them more enjoyable to watch.”
I think the band is very down to earth and this has a large impact of what their audience think about them. As I have only been to one of “their” gigs, the first impression of them was very important. My first impression was that they enjoyed what they did and drawn people into their songs. Adam says “I couldn’t believe how good they were, I expected them to be ok like but not as good as they were!” Harry said that he thought it was just going to be a laugh, he didn’t realise that when told him about him that he meant a proper band, but the band were much better than I expected. Jess says “My impressions were that they were so confident and the chemistry between them as a band was so good, you wouldn’t have thought that they had only just become a band. Amanda said that she couldn’t believe that Sean was so good and the rest of the band because they were just so good and engaged the audience so well.
Right well that’s all the question finished thank you for participating in this interview.

Music magazine 7

Throughout making my front cover i have made many changes including changes the main cover image and story. I have done this as the picture on my front cover now fits with the style indie better, whereas my image before that made the singer look like he was a soul singer or a rapper, as he is wearing dog tags. My background for my front cover has also changed aswell as the mise en seen fits more with indie rather than a plain grey background.
